Drink Like a Dad

Drink Like a Dad

Many dads will enjoy the occasional adult beverage from time to time. This is a good thing when used responsibly. The problem begins as it usually does when poor choices are made and by poor choices I mean the wrong damn kind of drink. The moment your very first child left the womb your drink choices irreversibly shrank. As a father you have an image to uphold, gone are the days when wine coolers and Smirnoff Ice are a good idea. No longer will you be allowed the luxury of blender created frozen treats, the daiquiri my friend is dead to you. I hope good sir that I need not mention … God save you, God save you I say if you are caught with a cosmopolitan.

With this in mind we have created a list of five respectable beverage choices the average dad can select and drink with the calm assurance that his aura of daditude is intact. No longer need you live in fear of raised eyebrows as you saunter into the room holding your whiskey sour.

#5
The Beer
– A dad can never go wrong with a beer. I would advise staying away from the common garden variety American beers. You are trying to enjoy your drink not suffer through it. There are many styles to choose from, experiment with a good Ale or Lager.

Some excellent examples would be:

German Pilsner: Krombacher
American Pilsner: Imperial Pilsner by Rouge Ales brewery
English Brown Ale: Newcastle Brown ale, Samuel Smith’s Nut Brown Ale
Hefeweizen: Paulaner Hefe-Weissbier

Experiment with anything that seems attractive to you at the local beer stop. The more beers you try the greater the chance you will find the one that is perfect for you. Attempt to avoid trolling for your beer at a grocery store or convenience shop due the selection is bound to be terrible.

Wine
– Wine is a good choice if you select the proper variety, think red. Wine may seem over rated and silly at times but in truth there is little better than a decent glass or two of wine during or after a meal. Consider trying a Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Syrah or Malbec.

Some favorites:

Cambria Julia’s Vineyard Pinot Noir 2006
Glen Carlou Cabernet Sauvignon 2006
Penfolds Kalimna Bin 28 Shiraz 2005
Chateau St. Jean Pinot Noir 2007
Kenwood Jack London Vineyard Zinfandel 2006

#3
Mixed Drink
– One mix per drink please, minimal fruit and no sour mix !  Sour mix should never be used unless you are in college or a woman… a woman who does not know how to drink.

Examples include:

Scotch and soda, Gin and tonic, Whiskey and soda, Vodka and tonic

The Martini – A classic … yes I admit it is kind of hard to see a fellow drink out of one of those silly long stemmed glasses. Properly prepared however, a martini very dry and stirred garnished with a olive can be a powerful and respectable drink choice. Hell if Sean Connery can drink these and be 007 you can drink one during a night out with the wife and not look like a tool.

Gin is the old reliable for this beverage but vodka can be used if Gin is not your thing. Do not go with the house default liquor if ordering this drink at a bar or restaurant. Do yourself a favor and choose one of the top shelf varieties, you will not regret it.
